Who are CBIT Manchester ?
The Manchester branch of The Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) supports anyone in the Greater Manchester area affected by childhood acquired brain injury. We provide information and support primarily to families but can offer help and advice to professionals connected with families.
An acquired brain injury is often referred to as hidden disability, and often goes unrecognised. This inevitably leads to problems for a child in terms of education, provision of care and support. Families often become the experts in their child's care with no formal qualification and no experience. CBIT and CBIT Manchester are working to change this and ensure that professionals recognise the impact and understand the issues.
How was CBIT Manchester founded?
In 2000 two of CBIT Manchester's founders Julie and Richard decided to establish a support group for the families of children with head injuries or acquired brain injury. Julie's son Alan was left with severe head injuries after an accident when he was a young child. Alan was hospitalised for two months and all of his problems did not become apparent until he had left hospital. Up to two years later in some instances.
On being discharged from hospital Julie found there was no one she could just talk to about Alan's problems. Caring for Alan was her full time concern so it was not until he was seventeen years old and his legal case was being settled did his solicitor Richard Crabtree discuss with Julie the concept of establishing a support group for families in a similar situation. Julie remembering how hard it was for her agreed immediately to help.
